Huskies originate from Siberia. They belong to the family which, at least for the last 5000 years, has not been influenced by wolves. Huskies are fun, friendly and very energetic. They would rather lick you than bite you. This breed is not good for guarding. Since these dogs were bred to hunt and pull sleds, they need a lot of exercise. When let off leash Husky can run as fast as 30 mph! Training is a very important aspect if you decide to have this dog. Huskies can survive in cold temperatures as low as -70 F. They are also pretty comfortable in warm climate. In 1925 Huskies participated in saving a small Alaskan city Nome. This operation is known as the “Great Race of Mercy”. 20 mushers and about 150 sled dogs, led by two world-famous dogs Balto and Togo traveled 674 miles (1,085 km) in five and a half days to deliver diphtheria antitoxin. They saved Nome and the surrounding communities from the epidemic. All participants received letters of appreciation from President Calvin Coolidge. The mayor of Los Angeles presented a bone-shaped key to the city to Balto in front of City Hall. In December 1925 a statue of Balto, created by Frederick Roth, was unveiled in New York City’s Central Park.
