Multiple births is the product of a variety of factors involving fertility drugs, heredity, food choices and age. Rates of twin births vary by location. Massachusetts, New Jersey and Connecticut, have the twinning rate that is 25% higher than the general population. On the other side, Hawaii and New Mexico have a twin birth rate 30% lower than the national average. The most common types of twins are identical and fraternal. There are 5 more types: half-identical, mirror image twins, mixed chromosome twins, superfecundation, and superfetation. The longest recorded gap between twin births is 85 days. One twin was born early due to complications, while the other one was left in the womb to further develop. The research has shown that twins do not have to have the same father. This phenomenon is called heteropaternal superfecundation. The studies have also shown that even after being separated at birth and reunited years later, twins are found to have similar personality and interests.
